A good website doesn’t start with fancy design.
It starts with a few simple fundamentals most people overlook.
Get these right and everything else becomes much easier.
Let’s start with a truth that might disappoint some people.
Your website does not need animations, fancy transitions, or an interactive hero section that looks like it was built by NASA.
Those things can be nice.
But they are not the reason a website works.
Before any of that, every website needs five very boring but very important foundations.
1. A Clear Explanation of What You Do
This sounds obvious.
It isn’t.
A surprising number of websites talk about “solutions”, “innovation”, and “transforming industries”… without ever explaining what the business actually does.
Within the first few seconds, a visitor should understand:
- what you offer
- who it’s for
- why they should care
If they can’t figure that out quickly, they’ll leave.
2. Simple Navigation
People should not have to play hide-and-seek with your website.
The core pages most businesses need are very simple:
Home
About
Services
Examples or Portfolio
Contact
That’s it.
If visitors can find what they need in two or three clicks, your navigation is doing its job.
3. A Way to Contact You
This might be the most overlooked part of many websites.
You would be amazed how often businesses make it difficult for people to get in touch.
Every site should have at least one clear option:
- a contact form
- an email address
- a booking link
Ideally, more than one.
Because when someone wants to contact you, that’s not the moment to make them work for it.
4. Mobile-Friendly Layout
Most visitors will see your website on a phone first.
If the layout breaks, text is too small, or buttons are awkward to tap, people will simply close the page.
Mobile design isn’t a feature anymore.
It’s the default.
5. A Clear Next Step
Your website should guide visitors towards something.
That might be:
Book a call
Send an enquiry
Download something
View your work
Without a clear next step, visitors often just… drift away.
The Fancy Stuff Comes Later
Once these foundations are in place, you can add all the interesting extras.
Design flourishes.
Advanced features.
Animations.
But the basics come first.
Because when the foundations are solid, everything else works better.
