THE BASICS
What Branding Actually Is (And Why a Logo Isn’t Enough)

Let’s clear this up early.

Branding is not:

  • A logo
  • A colour palette
  • A font choice

Those are outputs.

Branding is the system underneath them.

So What Is Branding?

Branding is how people feel about your business before they speak to you, and what they remember after they leave your website.

It’s the difference between:

“I’m not sure”

and

“I trust this.”

That feeling is created by consistency, clarity, and confidence. Not just visuals.

The Logo Obsession

“Looks fine” is one of the most dangerous compliments a website can receive.

It usually means:

  • Nothing stood out
  • Nothing confused them
  • Nothing compelled them either

A website doesn’t need to be flashy. It needs to be clear.

Clarity converts. Ambiguity does not.

Why This Happens So Often

Most websites are built backwards. Design comes first. Strategy comes later, if at all.

So you end up with:

  • Nice visuals
  • Weak messaging
  • No obvious user journey
  • No clear reason to enquire

That’s how websites become digital wallpaper.

The Fix (And It’s Not a Rebuild… Yet)

Before you throw the whole thing out, ask yourself:

  • Can someone understand what I do in five seconds?
  • Is the next step obvious on every key page?
  • Does this site feel like it belongs specifically to my business?

If the answer is no, that’s where the work is.

A website that works doesn’t shout.

It guides.

And when it’s doing that properly, you’ll feel it in your inbox.
